The business meeting portion was held before the program. President Timothy Killeen called the meeting to order at 10:40 a.m. Acceptance of minutes of the November 10, 2009 meeting was moved, seconded and unanimously approved as presented. Treasurer Richard Wurst presented the Treasurerâ €™s Report. Acceptance of the report was moved, seconded and unanimously approved as presented. Treasurer Wurst asked if any members knew why the Emeritus Assembly has a passbook savings account in addition to the checking account. The savings account does not have very much money in it and the interest is negligible. During a short discussion nobody in attendance could recall why there were two accounts, and it was moved to close the savings account and put the money in the checking account. The motion was seconded and unanimously approved. After the vote, Treasurer Wurst pointed out to the group that Timothy Killeen has been writing the newsletter and complimented him on a job well done. The business meeting was adjourned at 10:50 a.m. At the last minute, Gregory Hladky was unable to attend the panel discussion due to a family emergency. Howard Reiter admirably filled in, assisted by Morton Tenzer. Following the discussion many attendees gathered for lunch at the cafeteria in the Legislative Office Building. | AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS Emeritus Assembly Connecticut Conference Fourteen members of the Emeritus Assembly met at 10:00am on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at the State Board of Higher Education Conference Room, 61 Woodland Street in Hartford. Mark French, Associate Director of Student Financial Aid discussed recent changes in the higher education financial aid system. The focus of the discussion centered on the fact that the government and not the banks are now administering the national student loan program. This will be a big improvement from the student point of view. The second major point is that the Pell Grant program continues to be the corner stone of student aid in this country. Pell Grants are government grants based on need that do not have to be repaid. This program is in the billions each year. President Killeen called the business meeting to order at 12:25pm. The minutes of the October 19, 2010 meeting and the treasurer’s report were both distributed. They were each moved, seconded and unanimously passed as presented. President Killeen thanked Mort Tenzer for arranging today’s meeting. Flo Hatcher was introduced to the group and she was thanked for all that she has done for us over the years. She reiterated that she can assist us in obtaining lists of recent retirees from the State System. Under new business, it was noted that Mary Rogers is in Saint Joseph Living Center Nursing Home and is in failing health. The Assembly sent her flowers two weeks ago. Under other business, the spring meeting schedule is for Richard Norgaard to speak on “Living to be 100 in March and a visit to the Bradley Air Museum in April.
