The trilogy of tributes to Mary Rogers Beckert consists of three essays, one by Kathleen McGrory, one by Cecilia Welna, and one by Frances Josie Reynolds.  We posted them in the blog as they arrived and have made them into a webpage.  Please go to http://eact.info/Legacies/rogerstribute.html.

At the CSC-AAUP annual spring meeting on May 12/2011 in New Haven, at the request of Flo Hatcher, CSC-AAUP executive director, a moment of silence was led by Kathleen McGrory in memory of Mary Beckert.  The tribute itself has been included in the above mentioned collection..  A photo of Kahtleen  leading the moment is also included in the
e-vanguard of late summer, 2011.
The agreement with the state administration, as ratified by SEBAC continues to be the center piece of citizens' debate  in the year 2011 and into 2012.  We posted a number of links from local and national publications.  The impact of thise agreements  and the reorganizations of the state agencies, including thaat of the higher education system, are still to be felt.  People have been let go and others have come on board in many of the key positions that will provide oversight to the education system and other systems.  Regime change, as they  say.

To address the implications of the Connecticut budget crisis for retirees, Morton Tenzer has invited Ed Marth, retiring doirector of UConn-AAUP as speaker for the EA meeting on November 15, 2011.

For much of the details of the SEBAC's  negotiation with the state, especially that of the CSC-AAUP and CSEA, we  have Clifford Pelletier  Flo Hatcher, and Zoe Leibowittz to thank as they updated the information as they come up.  They  also forwarded alerts to what is happening within the state system, including those that affect the Connecticut higher education system.

Tim Killeen's editorials are well docummented in the
EA newsletters, which are also posted at this website .

Mort Tenzer's commentaries of  current issues  can be found at

Celebrate Retirement
Tim Killeen, EA President, published the spring 2012  issue of the Newsletter which  includes details of the above events.  He has kept members abreast of the progress through a number of posting in the EA home page,  which is the EACTBLOG.  As has been noted, Richard Wurst is  coordinating   the April 17, 2012 event at the BIMP, Tim Killeen for the lunch at the Willington Pizza House, and Tim himself is the coordinator for the May 17, 2012 event at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Be sure to register for both programs.  Use the forms in the newsletter or, for your convenience, a copy of the form is available at  reservations

To obtain a printed copy of the newsletter, please contact Tim at killeen2@charter.net.
The Newsletter is also available as an  e-newsletter version at
http://eact.info/Newsletter/nlspring 2012.pdf..
Special Note
Morton Tenzer's article on Michael Hogan's Tenure as President at Uconn is succinct and expressive.  You may find it as an entry for the blog on 5/13/2010 and at http://www.eact.info/cscnews/mtcommentaries.html.  How is that for back to the future as the latest news is that Michael Hogan has resigned from his position as president for the University of Illinois, on similar grounds.  See our blog entries on 3/22/2012 and 3/22/2012.
Tim Killeen, current EA newsletter editor, has this to say aboutf Mary Rogers Beckert,  founding  editor of the assembly's newsletter, who died on December 2nd, 2010. ."I want to mention  that I and several others would like to dedicate the coming newsletter to Mary Rogers.  Mary passed away recently and we all dearly miss her.  She was the heart and soul of the Emeritus Assembly and particularly the Newsletter for over 20 years.   Her gentle demeanor and sound advice are things that I and so many others were fortunate to be privy to.  Her work on the Newsletter is legend." .  We have posted several photos of Mary Rogers at Rogers' photos, and a collection of her writings at rogerscom. Mary's contributions to the website are also noted in the sections on legacies and website reports and elsewhere.
The next to the most recent issue of the Vanguard that we received from Flo Hatcher is that of the electronic version  of Vol. 30, Number 2.  on December 1, 2010.  It is available  at http://www.eact.info/cscnews/vangautumn10a.pdf.  The complete version for the  autumn 2010, Vol. 30, Number 1 that Flo sent on 11/4/2010 is at http://www.eact.info/cscnews/vangautumn10.pdf. An updated list of the conference chapter members is included in the complete version.  As usual, the Vanguard issues are excellent!

SAD, SAD, NEWS.  We heard from Youssef Kouatly on 3/9/2012 that he had learned of Cecilia Welna's death the day before, on 3/8/2012.  We were, needless to say, greatly shaken as this was most unexpected.  Dr.Welna had been a long time (10 years or so,) secretary of the assembly and continued to serve as editorial associate of this website since its inception in 2007.  Words cannot express our sorrow in the loss of her wise counsel, continuing support and encouragement, and warm engagement in our endeavors regarding the site. She was the only one who succeeded in geting through the process of becoming a team blogger and was able to post entries directly to the blog.  We have already missed her help in selecting and approving entries for the site and trimming the clutters.  In addition, Ceil had us apparently on her email buddies' list where she shared many fantastic photgraphs and stories, cautionary tales, jokes, and her enjoyment of the good life visiting museums, theaters,  opera performances at various places.  Her personal anecdotes were always full of good humor,  and even grace under fire.  This last is reflected in how she dealt with the situation of her email account  having been hacked.  She wrote that she talked with  a tech in Romania who was very nice and helpful and so now she only had to set about deleting 7000 undeliverable messages and  she was all set for a while. That was on February 28th, 2012, eight days before she died.   Ever an optimist, may she rest in peace.
For easy access, we have grouped the photos of memebers at the  events in 2011 into a pdf  page.   It is at photos2011.  However, for viewing them at their best, it is well to return to the blog and click on the thumbnails where the photos were first uploaded.  Many  thanks to Morton Tenzer, Kathleen McGrory, Youssef Kouatly and others.  They certainly are nice.
We wish to also thank those who contributed to the content of the website, including, in no paricular order, Cecilia Welna, Clifford Pelletier, Jane Knox, Tim Killeen, Morton Tenzer, Kathleen McGrory, Youssef Kouatly, Aoe Lleibowitz, Flo Hatcher, Eli Dabora, Josie Reynolds, Erika Karas, among others
About Cecilia Welna, Tim Killeen, EA president wrote in the 2012 Spring Newsletther:

We have lost one of our strongest advocates and a dear colleague.
Cecilia “Ceil” Welna died at home on March 8. She was an active member of the Emeritus Assembly since her retirement from The University of Hartford in 1991.  While at the University, she served as Professor, Chair of the Department of Mathematics, and Dean of The College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions.  Ceil served our organization in many ways, most notably as secretary for over ten years.
On her official retirement from that position in 2007, Mary Rogers wrote a wonderful tribute to Ceil which we have reprinted on page 7 of this newsletter.  Since 2007, we have continued to benefit from the work of Dr. Welna.  For each of the past 5 years, she has single handedly arranged at least one of our programs held at the Harry Gray center at the University of Hartford along with a wonderful lunch.  When I needed advice, and that was often, Ceil was one of the first responders to my email plea and always with very sensible and helpful input.  If she was not feeling well, no one could have suspected, for she was always upbeat and there when you needed her.  We will dearly miss you Ceil.    Tim Killeen
As noted, the  Mary Rogers article is reprinted in the spring 2012 newsletter.  The above note by Tim Killeen, sadly acknowledging our loss is part of the newsletter.  Both are at http://eact.info/Newsletter/nlspring2012.pdf.

A memorial to Dr. Cecilia Welna by Humphrey Tonkin, President Emeritus & University Professor of the Humanities at the University of Hartford, has been posted in our blog on March 28th, 2012.  It is avalable at
